Join the Friends of Johnson County Library Board of Directors

Formed in 1956, the Friends of Johnson County Library supports Johnson County Library by building community involvement, advocating for the Library and its needs, and encouraging broad awareness of its services, resources and impact.

Simply put, we are the community advocacy and support organization for Johnson County Library.

The Friends works closely with Johnson County Library and other community partners, but we are an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit business and receive no public funding.

About the Board

The Friends of Johnson County Library Board of Directors provides governance, financial stewardship, strategic leadership and community representation for the organization. Directors help safeguard the Friends’ mission and resources, provide oversight, serve as ambassadors for the organization and Library, and share responsibility for building the relationships and financial support necessary to sustain the Friends’ work.

Board service is an active leadership commitment. All Directors are expected to:

• Understand and support the Friends’ mission, strategic priorities, policies, programs and organizational needs;

• Exercise meaningful fiduciary oversight, including regularly reviewing and understanding the organization’s financial statements, budget, financial position and long-term sustainability;

• Serve as active advocates and ambassadors for the Friends and Johnson County Library;

• Participate actively in fundraising. Directors are expected to help identify prospective donors, sponsors, partners and other sources of support; make introductions and open doors where appropriate; and participate in fundraising activities and relationship-building on behalf of the organization;

• Use their personal and professional networks to strengthen the Friends’ community reach, fundraising capacity, reputation and ability to influence public policy;

• Attend and support Friends events and Friends-sponsored Library activities whenever possible;

• Maintain a current Patron-level Friends membership ($100 annually) or become a lifetime member (one-time gift of $1,000);

• Commit to serving the full three-year term and consider serving a second term;

• Attend Board meetings throughout the year and provide prior notice to the President when an absence is necessary, whenever possible. Under the Bylaws, a Director who is absent from three consecutive meetings without just cause may be asked to resign;

• Participate actively in task forces, special projects or Board initiatives and take ownership of agreed-upon work between meetings;

• Consider serving as an officer or in another Board leadership role;

• Volunteer with the Friends during the year and record volunteer hours in the designated tracking system; and

• Bring their individual expertise, perspective, relationships and leadership to advancing the organization—not simply attending meetings.
