Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity, Inc., is an all-embracing Christian non-profit that invites the communities we serve to put Godly love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hope in Eastern Jackson County (EJC), Missouri. Founded in 1989, Truman Habitat is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI).
 
With the help of our partner families and a wealth of community donors and volunteers, Truman Habitat has built and financed more than 100 homes for new home buyers and has repaired hundreds more to support the unmet needs of low-income neighbors in the communities we serve. And by building and improving homes here in our community, we are making a meaningful difference in the health of neighborhoods throughout EJC. The role of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is critical to the overall success and security of the organization which will ultimately allow Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity to provide ongoing services for our clients.
 

Finance and Administration:

We seek a CFO who enjoys the challenge of financial management concerning the responsibility of overseeing the company's financial operations, ensuring accuracy and transparency in all reporting, and providing strategic insights to drive sustainable growth. The ideal candidate will be adept at managing complex financial processes, optimizing financial performance, and aligning financial strategies with long-term business goals. Additionally, they will possess strong leadership skills, guiding and mentoring a team while fostering a culture of financial discipline and accountability throughout the organization.

Key Responsibilities … including, but not limited to:
 
FINANCE
 1. Financial Strategy and Leadership:
  • Provide strategic leadership and direction on all financial and accounting matters for Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity, ensuring that financial goals support the overall mission and objectives of the organization. Provide leadership and guidance to the Accounting Manager.
  • Lead the development and implementation of financial strategies, budgets, and forecasts.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO and Board of Directors on financial matters, providing insights and recommendations to support decision-making.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with external financial stakeholders, including donors, auditors, banks, and government agencies.
 
2. Financial Planning and Analysis:
  • Oversee the preparation of annual budgets, financial reports, and forecasts to ensure fiscal responsibility and transparency.
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting of financial performance to senior management and the Board of Directors.
  • Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, highlighting key performance indicators and financial trends.
 
3. Operational Finance Oversight:
  • Supervise the accounting manager, ensuring that effective financial systems, processes, and controls are in place to manage day-to-day operations efficiently.
  • Oversee payroll, accounts payable/receivable, and financial recordkeeping, ensuring accuracy and integrity in all transactions.
  • Lead the development of financial policies and procedures to safeguard the organization’s assets and enhance operational efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and financial reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate audits and work closely with external auditors to ensure timely and accurate audits.
  • Maintain and improve financial governance practices and internal controls.
4. Cash Flow and Treasury Management:
  • Oversee cash flow management, ensuring sufficient liquidity to meet operational needs.
  •  Provide cash flow projections to the CEO and the leadership team
  • Develop and implement treasury policies and procedures to optimize cash management.
5. Risk Management:
  • Ensure the organization complies with all relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards related to financial operations, including nonprofit accounting principles.
  • Manage the organization’s financial risks, including internal controls, insurance, and audits.
  • Oversee the preparation for and management of annual external audits, ensuring that all financial statements and processes are thoroughly reviewed and compliant with nonprofit regulations. Develop and maintain effective internal controls to safeguard company assets.
  • Manage insurance and financial hedging strategies to mitigate risk.
6. Fundraising and Resource Development:
  • Collaborate with the development team to assess and manage the financial needs of fundraising campaigns, ensuring that financial objectives are aligned with fundraising goals.
  • Provide financial data and analysis to support grant writing, donor stewardship, and reporting requirements.
 7. Strategic Planning and Organizational Support:
  • Partner with the CEO and leadership team to guide long-term strategic planning, financial modeling, and resource allocation.
  • Support the organization’s expansion, including the launch of new initiatives, by providing sound financial oversight and advice.
  • Ensure that financial resources are effectively allocated to support Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity’s housing projects and community initiatives.
  • Assist with fundraising efforts, including securing debt and equity financing when necessary.
 
Oversight Operations/Human Resources
 
1. The Operations/HR Manager reports directly to the CFO
  • Provide support and oversight to the Operations Manager performing the day-to-day operations and ensure all functions (HR, IT, facilities, etc.) are aligned with the organization’s mission and goals.
  • Ensure the organization’s infrastructure (IT, human resources, facilities, etc.) supports scalability and growth.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop the Operations Manager ensuring professional growth and high performance.

Required Qualifications & Proficiencies:
 
  1. A bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field is preferred; a master’s degree is preferred.
  2. Minimum of 10 years of experience in finance or accounting, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role (CFO or similar).
  3. Strong knowledge of financial regulations, accounting standards (GAAP), and financial reporting requirements.
  4. Proven experience managing nonprofit finances, including budgeting, financial reporting, and compliance.
  5. Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to motivate and develop teams.
  6. Self-motivated and able to work independently
  7. Strong business acumen and ability to think strategically.
  8. Experience in managing investor relations and fundraising.
  9. Dependability, reliability, strong work ethic, and commitment to the organization
  10. Well organized and detail-oriented … strong time management and organization skills
  11. Desire to be part of a cohesive team
  
Preferred Qualifications & Proficiencies:
 
  1. Ability to work with individuals, partners, and families of all diversity
  2. Experience in the non-profit sector preferred
  3. Experience in construction accounting preferred
  4. Understanding and support of the vision of Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity
 
Physical Requirements Necessary to Perform This Job:
 
This position requires office work.  Communication and interaction with others are required.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen.    The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; sit; and reach with hands and arms.

 Work Schedule
 
This is an exempt position. Days and hours of work are usually Tuesday through Friday based on the needs of the business.  An occasional Monday, evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
 
Compensation:   Based on the level of experience

Salary Range: $75,000 - 99,999
