Position: Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Reports to: Senior Minister/CEO

Position Summary:
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) provides strategic financial leadership and day-to-day operational oversight for all financial functions of Unity Temple on the Plaza, including Unity Temple operations, Temple Buddhist Center (TBC), Bookstore, and affiliated programs. This role blends financial planning with detail-oriented accounting practices to ensure fiscal health, transparency, and accountability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Planning & Budgeting
    Develop and manage the annual operating budget in collaboration with the Senior Minister/CEO. Provide financial forecasts and long-term planning to support strategic initiatives.

  • Accounting Oversight
    Ensure timely and accurate reconciliation of all financial accounts, including bank statements, credit cards, and internal sub-accounts. Oversee daily, weekly, and month-end accounting functions using QuickBooks. Responsible for the Sunday collection and safeguarding of funds, including preparing and making the bank deposit each Monday.

  • Financial Reporting
    Prepare and provide timely financial statements for review with the Senior Minister/CEO and COO. Then, submit finalized reports to the Board Treasurer in advance of monthly board meetings, and attend those meetings to support financial discussion and decision-making.

  • Year-End Responsibilities                                                                                                                                                  Prepare, reconcile, and file all required W-2s and 1099s in a timely manner. Oversee the generation and distribution of annual giving statements to donors and congregants.

  • Payroll & Compensation Management
    Oversee payroll processes, including coordination with external providers (e.g., ADP) and accurate tracking of payables for contractors, ministry personnel, and instructors. Prepare and process retirement contributions as directed.

  • Accounts Payable & Receivable
    Monitor and manage all income streams and outgoing payments across departments and ministries, ensuring proper coding and timely processing.

  • Internal Controls & Compliance
    Maintain sound accounting practices in alignment with GAAP standards and Unity Temple policies. Safeguard the organization’s financial integrity through internal controls, audit readiness, and documentation.

  • Collaboration & Communication
    Partner with ministry leaders, administrative staff, and the Board to support ongoing financial education, budget alignment, and operational clarity

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred but not required)

  • Proficiency in QuickBooks Online (QBO), ADP payroll systems, and Excel/Google Sheets

  • Minimum 5 years of accounting and financial management experience, preferably in a nonprofit or faith-based organization

  • Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting practices

  • Ability to manage multiple timelines and prioritize with accuracy and integrity

Compensation and Schedule:

This is a full-time, salaried position (approx. 40 hours/week). While health benefits are not offered, compensation is competitive for the nonprofit sector and reflects the experience of the selected candidate.
