Legal Aid of Western Missouri Grants Accountant Kansas City, Missouri
Legal Aid of Western Missouri (LAWMO) seeks a full-time Grants Accountant to join the Central Office in Kansas City, Missouri. This role is responsible for managing the financial aspects of LAWMO’s grant funding in collaboration with other team members, including preparing city billings, managing grant project budgets, maintaining funder communication related to financial matters, and supporting compliance with funding requirements. This individual will work closely with both the Director of Finance and the Director of Development to ensure grant reporting accuracy, budget alignment, and strong funder relationships.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Grants Accountant will be responsible for preparing, managing, and monitoring grant budgets in coordination with program leadership and the development team. This position will also oversee and complete billing processes for city, county, and other funders in accordance with contract requirements, while maintaining accurate financial records and documentation for all grant-related transactions in compliance with GAAP and funder guidelines. The Grants Accountant will prepare timely and accurate financial reports for funders, internal stakeholders, and auditors, and serve as a key financial point of contact with funders, including responding to financial inquiries and providing budget narratives as needed. Additional responsibilities include assisting in grant proposal development by preparing budget drafts and financial documentation; performing account reconciliations, including grant fund tracking, balance sheet accounts, payroll allocations, and fund usage limited to specific legal assistance projects; and posting and reviewing journal entries related to grant income and expenditures. The Grants Accountant will also support the annual audit and other financial reviews, particularly grant-related components, and identify opportunities to improve grant and financial processes for efficiency and compliance. Other duties and special projects will be assigned by the Director of Finance.
The qualified candidate must have the following:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field.
Minimum of 3 years' experience in nonprofit grant management or fund accounting.
Experience preparing and monitoring grant budgets and city/county billing.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with finance and development staff.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in communicating with funders.
Proficiency with accounting and payroll software (e.g., Blackbaud, Paylocity, Paycor, MIP, or similar) and Microsoft Excel.
Strong knowledge of GAAP and audit practices.
Ability to work independently, manage multiple deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities.
Physical Requirements: The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. and stand or sit stationary position much of the time. Normal office working conditions, the noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderate.
