Public Safety and Security Officer

The Kansas City Public Library is hiring seven Public Safety and Security Officer positions. The Public Safety and Security Officer is responsible for providing security for the Kansas City Public Library staff, patrons, and assets while unarmed. This position is a full-time non-exempt position. The pay is $20.05 per hour, plus excellent benefits . Position is open until filled.
 

Bluford Branch (2 positions): 3050 Prospect Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri, 64128. 

Bluford - Schedule (Position 1)

Tuesday - Saturday: 8:30 am - 5 pm

 

Bluford - Schedule (Position 2)

Sunday: 10:30 am - 5 pm

Monday: 8:30 am - 5 pm

Tuesday - Thursday: 11:30 am - 8 pm

 

Northeast Branch (2 positions): 6000 Wilson Avenue, Kansas City, Missouri, 64123. 

 

North east - Schedule (Position 1)

Sunday: 12:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Monday - Thursday: 8:30 am - 5:30 pm

 

North east - Schedule (Position 2)

Tuesday - Thursday: 11:30 am - 8 pm

Friday & Saturday: 8:30 am - 5 pm

 

Floater Schedule: This position has varied schedules at different branches throughout the week.

Plaza location: 4801 Main Street, Kansas City, MO, 64112. 

 

Floater - Schedule (Position 1)

Wednesday & Thursday: 8:30 am - 5:30 pm (Plaza Branch)

Friday & Saturday:  8:30 am - 5:30 pm (Northeast Branch)

Sunday: 12:30 pm - 5:30 pm (Northeast Branch)

 

Floater - Schedule (Position 2)

Monday: 11 am - 8 pm (Bluford Branch)

Tuesday: 8:30 am - 5 pm (Plaza Branch)

Friday & Saturday:  8:30 am - 5 pm (Bluford Branch)

Sunday: 10:30 am - 5 pm (Bluford Branch)

 

Floater (Special Events) - Schedule (Position 3) - This position will mostly be utilized during special events at the Truman Forum and other security needs at the Plaza location: 4801 Main Street, Kansas City, MO, 64112. 

Monday - Friday: 1 pm - 9:30 pm (Plaza Branch)

 

Note: All Public Safety Officer positions are subject to working at other Library locations. Although the schedules are mostly fixed, we may adjust them to meet organizational needs.

 

Job Duties (Essential Functions)

  1. Patrols Library-owned property, both inside the building and its perimeters. 
  2. Conducts a monthly inspection on assigned Library locations. 
  3. Creates incident reports to track safety concerns, including daily activities and irregularities. 
  4. Creates maintenance requests to identify attention needed to a specific matter. 
  5. Reviews surveillance footage related to incidents. 
  6. Examines doors, windows, and gates to ensure security. 
  7. Notifies Police and Fire Department by telephone in case of emergency situations. 
  8. Enforces Library rules related to safety and customer courtesy & conduct, including providing warnings and apprehending/evicting violators. 
  9. Communicates with vendors and submits purchase requisitions and service requests. 
  10. Activates and deactivates security alarms. 
  11. Responds to public safety matters after hours. 
  12. Supports library safety efforts at all locations as needed. 
  13. Gains and maintains knowledge of confidentiality of customer information, freedom of information, and intellectual freedom and reflects understanding and compliance in interactions with staff and the public.
  14. Maintains knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, and national security operations. 
  15. Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  1. Demonstrated ability to work independently. 
  2. Ability to follow both oral and written directions. 
  3. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time. 
  4. Ability to work with and take direction from Administration and Branch Managers. 
  5. Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, and Word), Surveillance Security DVR systems, Alarm interfaces. 
  6. Knowledge of confidentiality of customer information, freedom of information, and intellectual freedom. 
  7. Access to transportation. 
  8. Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, and national security operations. 
  9. Must obtain and maintain a security license through Kansas City Missouri Police Department. 
  10. Possess a reliable means of transportation between Library Branch locations. 
  11. Ability to speak and understand English is required, additional consideration will be given to individuals that are proficient in any non-English languages spoken in Jackson County, MO including Spanish, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili. 

Required Education and Experience

  • One year certificate from college or technical school; or (three to) six months related experience preferred. 
  • Licensed with KCPD or meets eligibility requirements to become licensed within 2-months of hire. 
  • Experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • AED/CPR and First Aid certification must be possessed or acquired within 6-months of employment and maintained. 
  • Previous verbal de-escalation training or obtained within the first 30-days of employment. 
  • A minimum of 1 year customer service experience. 

Work Environment

Work is performed at the Central Library and Library Branches throughout the district. Primary workspace is shared with co-workers in an office environment, other work will be performed in a public space amongst staff and patrons from a diverse socio-economic community.
